Battling corruption would yield no results till we all stand united to deal it a death blow, said founder chancellor of VIT G Viswanathan. Infodea spoke to this reputed educationist about politics, education and other issues.
There should be a concern among us about corruption, there is a need for us all to take it seriously, till this happens, battling corruption would be futile. We can abondon the corrupt, this will make the wrong doers realise their mistake, he said. There should be internal freedom in the political parties, he reminded. There are about 2000 political parties, Tamilnadu has about 500 parties, but none of them have internal freedom. But they are under the influence of either families or individuals. Such parties are considered to have no high regards.
Vast difference in the politics of the past and present did not escape the notice of this reputed educationist. People with service motive used to get party tickets in the past, unfortunately it is not the case now. Economically affluent only get party tickets currently, prospects for not so forunate sections are only bleak. Politics are no longer centered around issues but are on money. You can build your own party if you have the financial muscle. A lot of political parties come into exitense with a motive of helping the poor, but their lifespan is too short.
They disappear after the polls are over. Parties are regulated in reaching the people. Lives of the not so fortunate managed to see less improvement, for they are the focus for most of the political parties. Focus is on an individual or their near and dear ones, said Viswanathan.
Former Chief Ministers J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi were capable of influencing the politics at the centre from Tamilnadu. There is no one in the state to match their stature. However, someone could emerge post the general elections and assembly polls.
The number of seats in the higher education arena have to be enhanced. Take medical courses for example, 13 lakh students appear every year, but only about 60,000 manage to get an entry. More colleges must be established to increase the number of seats. Goods must be manufactured locally and not imported. Local making will promote employment opportunities, he said.
