General elections are to be held across India in a few days from now and it is time for us all to raise to the occasion and go for voting. Voters have to be aware was the message driven home during the inauguration of a two day voter awareness campaign organised at University of Madras.
Speaking more in this regard, Satyabrata Sahoo, chief electoral officer, Tamilnadu said people must ensure presence of their names in the voters list. Approach concerned polling station, Panchayat office or Taluk office to check names in the voters list. Should the names not be there, take efforts to enroll the names, he said.
We need to understand the value of our vote, the power it has and value associated with it. Each one of us must understand the responsibility we have towards this nation, unless this happens, there would be no progress for our country. If we are able to conduct elections in a free and fair manner, it is owing to empowerment of Election Commission of India.
The organisation has grows strong and independent over the years, said Satyabrata Sahoo. Think over who would be a proper candidate and then go for voting. Those who have registered for their voter card recently, can call 1950 to know the status. Priority is there for differently abled people too. We are providing amenities like wheelchairs for them, so that they can approach the polling station to cast their vote. Registrar of University of Madras R Srinivasan, director of Chepauk campus of the university S Sundaram, head of Journalism department at the university Professor Leo Samuel were among others present.
