  • “WE FACE SEXISM NOT ONLY THROUGH MEN, BUT ALSO FROM WOMEN”- VIDYA BALAN

“WE FACE SEXISM NOT ONLY THROUGH MEN, BUT ALSO FROM WOMEN”- VIDYA BALAN

    Pranshi Ladha, INN/ Madhya Pradesh

Bollywood films are learning and embracing the premises that present ladies not just as an object or a maiden in trouble, yet it’s still a long way to go until it vanishes. Be it -“Akeli ladki khuli hui tijori ki tarah hoti hai” from Jab We Met, 2007 or “Preeti, chunni thik karo” from Kabir Singh, 2019, sexism has been taking shelter in Bollywood from Feroza Begum (1932) to Ananya Pandey (2018).  But you don’t expect the top actors to face problems like sexism or chauvinism, well they face them too.

Vidya Balan Fights Patriarchy in Amazon's 'Sherni' - Variety

Vidya Balan in an interview for her latest release “Sherni”, said- “I think we face sexism constantly, and not simply through men, even from ladies. Once in a while, we do that to different ladies as well. I think sexism is so natural for the man centric outlook, in which we are totally soaked, that it is difficult to get rid of it easily. I face it even today, at times. It bothers me, obviously, it is significantly less now than previously. Surrounding me, I see individuals confronting sexism. Not every person is even mindful that they are saying something incorrectly, more often than not,” she said.

Many actresses like Sonam Kapoor and Anushka Sharma have also talked about sexism. Anushka once pointed out an instance where the better hotel room was given to the male actor because he was the more popular star. Sonam has been captured while talking about disparity in pay between male and female stars.

In a discussion with Hindustan Times, Vidya also reviewed her experience of confronting sexism and said that she was approached to change her dates as per the male entertainer’s accessibility, regardless of whether she has a more noticeable job in the film. “In my initial years, I would consistently be informed that, ‘The male entertainer has given his dates, so you should work your dates around his.’ Sometimes, it didn’t considerably matter in the event that I was assuming a more conspicuous part than him in the film,” she said. Vidya expressed her concern about how she still sees sexism in Bollywood and it annoys her to an extent but now she has learnt to deal with it.

Sexism runs deeper than just the roles portrayed by women on screen. Bollywood has a culture of projecting more old male legends as young heroes, as male stars are reluctant to resign and play more established characters. In the interim, female entertainers are relied upon to assume the part of a mother or grandma the second they reach 35. This has brought about obvious age differences between co-stars. As indicated by an examination, the age distinction between co-stars in Bollywood has expanded from a few years to more than 25 in the previous decade. Although the glass is hard to break, there are films like Dangal which are contributing in changing the thought process of the bollywood industry.

Madhuri Dixit’s outfits in Hum Aapke Hain Koun were widely appreciated by women especially at weddings and other social occasions. Even the suits worn by Rani Mukerji in Bunty Aur Babli were another fashion rage. The fashion industry capitalizes on the trend by launching their jewelry and clothes in movies.

  • “Allow them to make you better, not bitter”, says Trishala Dutt

“Allow them to make you better, not bitter”, says Trishala Dutt

    Khevna.P.Shah, INN/Bangalore

    @Shahkhevna1, @Infodeaofficial

Daughter of the Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and Richa Sarma, Trishala Dutt expressed how she deals with her judgment. She simple say, “unfortunately it comes with the family name” when she was asked “How do you deal with so many people judging you constantly?” in a Q and A session on Instagram.
Sanjay Dutt's daughter Trishala Dutt reveals details of her longest relationship, says 'today he has children' | People News | Zee News

Living in such a society where you are being judged for your very action is toxic and exhausting. And especially when you come from a controversial background, you are judged the moment you are exposed to the media. Sadly, Trishala Dutt  says that “I’ve had people judging me since the day I took my first breath, It comes with the family name, unfortunately.” Isn’t it cruel to judge a person merely based on his/her name without the acknowledgment of their work?

She further explained the reason why people judge. “When people feel upset or disconnected from the world, they project their unhappiness on the people they interact with. “They start judging the world around them. Haven’t you noticed? It’s only when we are unhappy with ourselves, and our lives, we begin to judge, blame and criticize those around us. Nobody does this when they’re happy,” she wrote explaining why people judge.

Trishala Dutt being a psychotherapist understands the psychological trauma and impact on one, when he/she is being judged and often uses her social media to raise awareness about various issues. She requests to treat everyone with love, compassion, and respect including those who judge and criticize you harshly, not because they deserve it but because you do.

Passing judgment and criticism might be a harmless activity but results in harmful consequences. Judgment often restricts the ability of a  person to emphasize with the other person. According to few psychologists, one passes judgment when they are threatened by their position in society. According to the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, “Although our conscious minds are avoiding our flaws, they still want to deal with them on a deeper level, so we magnify those flaws in others.” He believes that a person only views the other person as a projection of oneself. And according to American-British psychologist  Raymond Cattell, some people simply express these traits in different ways, at different times, and in different areas of their lives and some may be dominant, and some may be dormant.

As quoted by Earl Nightingale  “When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself.” Simply means that the world is our mirror and judging someone defines the way we are more than it defines who they are. Judging shuts us down and prevents us from understanding the full situation or a new truth that we are unaware of.

Not only the celebrities are the victim of this horrendous act of judgment, but soo are the common people. It a high time to put an end to this act for humanity’s sake. And before judging try understanding the plight of the other person and the situation that moulded him/her in this way.

Mrunal Thakur tells us why this is her year, despite the pandemic

    Riya Yadav, INN/Gwalior, @infodeaofficial

Breaking stereotypes comes rather naturally to Mrunal Thakur. From making the nearly impossible transition from television soaps to films, to scoring a Hollywood break (Love Sonia, 2018, alongside Demi Moore and Frieda Pinto) before her Bollywood debut with Hrithik Roshan in Super 30 – her journey has been full of breakthroughs. While she continues to make a case for short haired Hindi film heroines- a rare breed she admits, she is forming quite a beeline for herself with upcoming projects opposite Farhan Akhtar and Shahid Kapoor.

On a pleasant March morning, just before the COVID -19 outbreak completely changed our world, we caught up with Mrunal at Rooh, New Delhi , where she channelled her favourite festive looks for summer celebrations.

Mrunal Thakur- I feel settled in front of the camera – that’s for sure! Be it a web film or a Bollywood movie, the medium doesn’t matter to me anymore. I want to get out of my comfort zone and work with different directors and explore various genres. I am willing to be uncomfortable and under confident. I realise how lucky I am to be able to make the television to Bollywood jump, and I want to set an example for other aspiring TV actors!

Right now, I have three films in the pipeline – Rakeysh Akhtar, Jersey with Shahid Kapoor, directed by Gowtam Tinnauri, and then Aankh Micholi by Umesh Shukla. Although the first two films I am doing are both sports dramas based, I am most excited for my character in Toofan, which is about the journey of a boxer.

Lockdown has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me. I am taking it one day at a time, and trying to be as productive as possible. I have been giving Marie Kondo’s organising techniques a try, catching up on classic novels such as Of Human Bondage and Sophie’s choice, trying my hand at baking delicious Ragi and oats breads, and also completely my graduation in sociology through distance learning, which I have had on my mind for the last past 10 years!

While some of us complain, rave and rant about being stuck indoors, others are focusing on the good, being patient and taking it one day at a time. There’s something to be said for the latter set, those who are grateful for this break of sorts, finding peace in the stillness, making the best of the ambiguous situation and still managing to stay creative and positive. Musician Prateek Kuhad falls into that set, taking it easy, releasing new content featuring fans and not letting the current period under house arrest dampen his spirit.

From his 2013 EP Raat Raazi to the album In Tokens and Charms that released in 2015 and his 2018 Barack Obama approved EP cold/mess as well as a handful of singles released in between, singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad has constantly touched upon the highs and lows of human relationships.

From romantic longing to more than relatable gut-wrenching heartbreak, it is Kuhad’s candour, vulnerability and awkwardness that has led to him forming personal connections with his listeners. Crowdsourcing footage from his fans, Kuhad released the music the video for his fans, Kuhad released the music the video for his fans, Kuhad released the music the video for his latest single ‘kasoor’ a couple of weeks ago.

With the idea of the universality of love forming the central premise, the singer songwriter invited his fans to participate via a mailer, who then went on to record their honest and emotional responses to personal prompts and questions. Whittling down submissions from 400 fans and 45 hours’ worth of footage into a 3 minute film (which also includes some known faces like Jim Sarbh, Zoya Hussain, comedians Kunal Kamra and Mallika Dua and Kavya Trehan), Kuhad and Jugaad Motion Pictures have created in emotionally charged, expressive and stirring video via remote collaboration for the single  the conception of which Kuhad attributes to destiny.
