Bihar experiencing a wave of change: Neeraj Yadav

    Vishnu Sharmaa, INN/Chennai, @SVS037

Indian state of Bihar is now experiencing a wave of change as per the well-known dictum which says change alone in this world is constant and nothing on this earth remains immune to this rule. Bihar too is perhaps not an exception as far as change is concerned.

Change is just a change, there is nothing like it. It has a lot of definitions and they would vary from person to person. This can sometimes be the most desired one if one is passing through troubled times. One will perhaps never think of change if they are in the laps of prosperity.

One can still say a lot about change which sometimes brings back the things of the past into our memories. Treading down the memories, one will never be able to forget the Emergency of 1975.

It would not be an easy thing to wipe out the past sometimes from our memories as they leave an impression that would last for years. Interestingly, Bihar was the state where a strong protest was recorded against Emergency, under the leadership of Jaiprakash Narayan and Karpuri Thakur. What happened in Bihar left an everlasting impression.

Time has moved ahead since then, arriving into the present, Bihar appears to be turning into a venue for a change that can have the same impression that the protest against emergency has managed to garner. Infodea spoke to Niraj Yadav, senior leader from RJD to know more.

The process of bringing the change has been initiated, he said. The times today are not different from what it was in 1975. It was a declared emergency then, but now it is an undeclared emergency. The efforts are on, Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar have visited the national capital in this regard.

They have met with leaders of local and regional parties there, said Niraj who is also the former MLA of RJD. The focus as of now would be to do stop BJP from coming to power. The question as to who would be the Prime Minister candidate from the opposition would be answered at the appropriate time.

Focus will be on uniting those forces that oppose BJP, said the senior leader. BJP and its allies in the media have been diverting the attention of the people from issues of importance, he said. BJP has lost prominence in Bihar, there are no bright prospects for them as their confidence among the people of the state has only gone down.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Bihar either during loksabha elections or to take part in any major event. Many promises have been made, none of them have been fulfilled. This is why people in Bihar appear to have lost trust in BJP, they imposed their faith in RJD during the previous assembly elections. Youngsters seem to have more trust on Tejasvi Yadav, they are hopeful that he would do good to the state.

Senior leader said BJP forms an alliance with a political party and establishes the government, later on the attempt is made to either weaken the party or destroy it with whom they have an alliance. Punjab and Maharashtra had seen these type of attempts. Similar kind of attempt was made in Bihar, however, it did not succeed owing to timely counter strategy of Nitish Kumar.

Speaking about Electronic Voting Machines and the chances of tampering them, he said he heard many times that EVMs could be tampered. Many feel tampering of EVMs could be the reason as to why RJD could not gain votes in large numbers. He further said tampering could offer benefit in small numbers. About 200 to 250 votes could be altered, attempt to alter anything more than that could lead to apprehension.

  • Celebrity influence in Indian politics

    Celebrity influence in Indian politics

    Khevna.P.Shah, INN/Bangalore

    @Shahkhevna1, @Infodeaofficial

The trend of attaching Bollywood to politics started long back in the 1960s when Prithviraj Kapoor of the Kapoor dynasty was the first celebrity to enter parliament as a nominated member in the Rajya Sabha. And since then many celebrities from the industry involved themselves in Indian politics directly or indirectly and some were successful or unsuccessful as well.

In 1984, the well-repeated star of the industry, Amitabh Bachchan contested Lok Sabha elections against the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and also won by one of the highest victory margins in the general history of the election with a vote of 68.2%.

In the south many celebrities have left a mark in Indian politics and the common string among them is the movies that catapulted them into politics. Like  MG Ramachandran aka MGR, who is regarded as one of the most influential actors in Tamil cinema, rose to power and became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Succeeding  MGR, Jayalalithaa, another actor-turned-politician became Chief Minister. She had formed a personality cult and was known as Amma among her followers. Although infamous for her corruption, she is remembered for her public welfare in the state (including several subsidized Amma-branded goods). Others in the same category are NT Rama Rao and M Karunanidhi.

The Good And Bad Of Celebrity Regime In Indian Politics | Youth Ki Awaaz

But unlike their southern counterparts, Bollywood stars often played supporting roles and many times lost all utility once they had met their purpose.  Amitabh Bachchan quit within a few months of becoming an MP and Rajesh Khanna couldn’t go beyond being someone who almost soured Advani’s party.

Film and sports stars have been an active part of politics and few left behind a legacy but why is the preference given to the celebrities over the grassroots leaders who work hard to nurture the constituency.

In the country of a large population, India, superstars are worshipped and even given more importance over political leaders. The people idolize the stars and sometimes that becomes an advantageous element for the political party to win the publics’ vote.

In the majority of cases, the involvement of celebrities may be a political threat to any of the other leaders. When Shatrughan Sinha had his fallout amongst his own party members he decided to contest elections on a different party symbol which didn’t prove to be a threat to Ravi Shankar Prasad. It is a perfect example where celebrities are dependent for their election on existing political parties and their individual brand does not offer an attractive option for the voters when they do not conform to the party lines.

Also, Elections in India are a  display of money power and a massive amount of money be it directly or indirectly is required to contest elections. The seizure of cash during elections is testimony to it. In the recent general elections, more than ₹3000 crores have been recovered in the form of cash, alcohol, and drugs. Also, this election is seen  as the “most expensive election ever, anywhere.” Because of this larger appeal, celebrities don’t struggle much to generate money, or many times their star appeal compensates for the money.

There is no written rule that celebrities should consider politics as their mainstream agenda, but is it also not fair to the genuine hardworkers of the party to be sidelined simply because they don’t have a well-recongnized face. But when celebrities take interest in the commoners’ life, serve with purposefully leaving the publicity aside then who can stop them from being well-established politicians. After all, it all comes down to the public because it is their vote that matters. The public should choose their leader wisely and not under some pressure of glamour and media.

Why the leader replacing Yediyurappa means a lot for Karnataka politics and secularism

On 6 April 2020, BS Yediyurappa instructed that anybody communalizing the events of members of the Tablighi Jamaat testing positive for the coronavirus will be negotiated with hardly. He was dug through by various right-wing accounts, various pertaining to the IT cell of his party and by rulers of the Sangh Parivar. The anti-Muslim oratory that was being raised by the BJP after the Tablighi Jamaat gathering in Delhi was criticized by one of them. A BJP Chief Minister intimidating strategy against the dog-whistling did not go adequately with the right-wing ecosystem.

Numerous senior leaders of the Karnataka BJP have reflected great assistance of communally controversial pet plans of the Sangh and BJP. While Karnataka under CM Yediyurappa has acquired some of them comprising the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2020, various related strategies have not been enforced. This despite various senior leaders and ministers of Yediyurappa’s cabinet supporting them.

When BJP General Secretary CT Ravi said Karnataka also would give rise in law to prevent ‘love jihad’ in the state, like in Uttar Pradesh, and establish backing among several ministers, Yediyurappa declined to seize any meeting to even examine the adopted bill. When uproar for a UP-like public control bill was mooted for Karnataka also, Yediyurappa’s CMO settle by sense and illustrated that Karnataka does not need such a law.

However, it will be misinformation to announce that Yediyurappa’s BJP has entirely kept up off from communalism. Karnataka’s coast noticed polarization maximum visibly during Yediyurappa’s second phrase as CM. Beneath his Chief Ministership, the famous pub attack, church attacks assumed in Mangaluru. From the infamous DJ Halli riots to police cruelty on the anti-CAA protesters in Mangaluru, his recent term has also been damaged by such happenings.

While his backers may assert that Yediyurappa was not the corps supporting all of this, as the CM the single stops with him. While few announce his reasonable standpoint on numerous problems is sensible politics, several others friendly to him claim that while he is personally a religious man, he does not harbor cooperative hate.

Vidya Dinakar, an activist who has acted against communalism in coastwise Karnataka concerns who the another Chief Minister would be. “Somebody like Ananth Kumar Hegde seizing responsibility, “Whereas Yediyurappa, in my knowledge, has ignored taking advantage of divisive communal politics. I have listened of various illustrations when Muslim organizations would join him, attempt to encourage him of something and if he notices justification in their statement, he would instantly react thoroughly despite the prospect of his party being uneasy. He comes off to not precisely go by communal analyses. If the leadership was rabid then we would have glimpsed a various trick on the ground, same as other states,” Vidya adds.
