Neither the BJP nor the Opposition would raise the Pegasus phone hacking issue in Parliament, which has now been delayed for four days. Santanu Sen, a member of the Trinamool Congress, was suspended for the remainder of the Rajya Sabha session for tearing Ashwini Vaishnaw’s statement.
A similar situation occurred in the Lok Sabha, which was unable to conduct business. The first week of the Monsoon Session was mostly a washout, except for a discussion on Covid on Tuesday in the Rajya Sabha.
A resolution in the Rajya Sabha sought Sen’s suspension for “unruly behaviour unbecoming of a Rajya Sabha member” and for “tearing the Minister’s speech”.
Midway through the session, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu formally suspended Sen.
Opposition MPs objected, alleging they were not given a chance to react. No one in the TMC has seen the motion, says Derek O’Brien, floor leader. After the House adjourned on Thursday, Sen encountered hooliganism, he claimed.
Naidu answered that he was not aware of the situation. “I take notice of what is happening in the house in the presence of the chair. As a result, we were unaware of what transpired until we read the news. “
Naidu adjourned the House amidst an uproar. As the House reconvened, Sen refused to leave the chamber despite repeated orders from the Chair, and the stalemate led to numerous adjournments.
Sen’s image was distributed to all House access gates, along with instructions to the marshals that he should not be let inside. According to Rajya Sabha Secretariat sources, no business may be conducted until the suspended member has been removed from the House.
“Thank you, once again, to @narendramodi and the @BJP4India government for suspending me from # Parliament in the most unparliamentary manner. However, you may be certain that the voices of dissent raised by @MamataOfficial ji and @AITCofficial will not be silenced. Sen subsequently tweeted, “# BharatiyaJasoosParty Minister @HardeepSPuri may be rewarded for hooliganism.”
After the IT minister’s comments on the Pegasus problem, Naidu told the Business Advisory Council meeting on Thursday that members may seek explanations from the government, he added.
So, they could “address the issues they were concerned about.” Unfortunately, however, the procedures of the House reached a new low when the papers were taken away from the Minister before being ripped up and hurled into the air. Assaults on our parliamentary democracy are the result of such acts. There is no glorification of the world’s largest democracy. So why should MPs participate in undermining the country’s international standing? “he said.
As the President of this august house, I am extremely disturbed by the actions that have taken place in this august house. “I expect many of you to be in the same position as I am. If that’s the case, we’ll find a way out of the current situation, “he added.
Parliament is much more than just a political institution, given its constitutional mission, I said at the beginning of the session. “Naidu stated there was a lack of regard for the Constitution and for the sanctity of Parliament.”
Sen, 48, is a doctor by profession and is a first-time member of the Rajya Sabha. He lost to incumbent Mamata Banerjee in the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections from Kandi in Murshidabad district but was sent to the Upper House by her. Who knows Sen? He’s renowned for keeping a low profile, so his participation in the Parliament drama may have shocked them.
Sen was among those who watched the Mamata Banerjee government’s efforts to battle the Covid-19 epidemic last year. A few months ago, he was suspected of receiving unlawful commissions.
