It’s ironic that West Bengal’s fiercest political adversaries, the Trinamool Congress and Congress, are getting closer, thanks to the Pegasus scandal.
Abhishek Banerjee of the TMC and Rahul Gandhi of the Congress are listed as possible Pegasus targets.
Mamata Banerjee invited veteran Congress leaders P. Chidambaram and Digvijaya Singh to the virtual Martyrs’ Day event on July 21. In 1993, the then-ruling Left Front administration in Kolkata opened fire on Congress protestors.
According to sources, Banerjee issued the invitation to top Congress officials because she feels that without the Congress, no front would be able to take on the BJP juggernaut in the 2024 national elections, despite the party’s poor polling record in previous state elections.
According to insiders, Banerjee feels the Congress still has a strong support base in many regions of the nation. According to sources, when electoral strategist Prashant Kishor went to see the Gandhis in Delhi, he was given a brief that the party needed to pull its socks up.
Trinamool’s bitterest adversary in Bengal, the Left, was the target of an alliance between the Congress and TMC in 2017; the pact was repeated for the 2021 elections.
Aside from this, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary’s nomination as the state’s top congressman has made matters worse, as well. When it comes to Saradha and Narada, Choudhary is quite outspoken in his assaults on Banerjee.
Choudhary was to be replaced by Sonia Gandhi, but that idea has been delayed indefinitely. A back-channel contact has been established between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress, sources claimed. Pegasus was a target for Rahul Gandhi as well, so whenever the TMC brought it up in Parliament, they would also add that Rahul Gandhi was also on the Pegasus list.
Chidambaram and Abhishek Singhvi, among others, are reportedly being tapped by the Congress to start the dialogue.
As we would have been in other instances, we’re not even angry that the TMC admitted Abhijit Mukherjee, the son of former president Pranab Mukherjee. A top Congress leader remarked, “This is an indication that we are going to let the TMC get away with some things on some matters.”
Banerjee’s anticipated meeting with Sonia Gandhi on her Delhi visit next week is another obvious indicator of the TMC’s cozying up to Congress. Despite her criticism of Rahul Gandhi, Banerjee has always had an excellent relationship with Sonia Gandhi, with whom she has a solid connection.
It may not be easy, but Banerjee is determined to topple PM Modi’s BJP in 2024. She’s attempting to bring the warring regional parties together to stop PM Modi’s juggernaut. According to sources close to Banerjee, her biggest struggle would be the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, for which she is willing to temporarily put aside her wrath and animosity against the Congress.
