There is some happy news for people of Chennai this time. The prices of onions which have become dearer in the recent past are said to have come down. The cost is said to have come down to Rs 120 per kilogram.
The number of trucks bringing onions are said to have witnessed an increase. Currently, about 50 trucks carrying onions are said to be arriving at Koyambedu, which is more than what was seen in the recent past. The supply of onions went up as the farmers have given more yield.
More onions will be coming in the coming days, prices will are likely to further come down, says M. Munusamy, an onion vendor near Koyambedu market. Each truck that comes into the market brings with it about 18 tons of onions, he says.
The price reduction has managed to put some cheer on city residents. Onions are essential part of our Indian cooking and without that certain dishes lack taste, says T. Ganapathy, an IT professional. This is a happy news of a sort, he quickly reminds. We will be able to afford onions if the prices have come down.
Equally happy is Mahadevan, who runs an eatery at Guindy Industrial Estate. If onions cost cheaper it is good, he says. Many of the dishes we prepare involve onion, if they become costly, we will have no option but to increase the prices of food items. But increasing the price is easier said than done, so reduction in prices are a good news for us.
