Civil defence organisation protects lives

One may not even remember them when things around us are alright. Their service is of paramount importance during the crisis hour. This is apt for Civil Defence Organisation (CDO). 
CDO of Southern Railway successfully conducted its yearly civil defence training programme in Chennai which coincided with the 53rd annual civil defence raising day celebrations at Railway Institute Ground (Perambur) on  December 7.
Southern Railway additional general manager P K Mishra praised the work done by volunteers of Southern Railway CDO. He also unveiled the civil defence manual in the presence of additional divisional railway manager of Chennai division R Mukund who is also the emergency officer of civil defence for Southern Railway.
In Railways, CDO is dedicated to protecting the lives and providing rescue and relief measures to the civilian population during war time, natural calamities and especially during train accidents. 
Civil Defence Raising Day is celebrated on the December 6 every year. About 250 volunteers are drawn from various divisions of Southern Railway and are given training based on the changing needs of disaster management during the yearly refresher course during the Raising Day programme.
Civil Defence is a volunteer-based emergency response organization. Civil Defence operates at national level under the Department of Defence.  Emergency rescue and relief services including medical relief are organised not only during times of war, but also during Natural Disasters, Calamities and Accidents through the local authorities in each area throughout the country.  
The Civil Defence Officer acts as the link between the volunteer, community, local authority and the organisation nationally.
