The three constituents of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) have determined that the next speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will be from the Congress party, according to NCP president Sharad Pawar.
“The three parties (Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress) have resolved that the new Speaker will be from the Congress party only,” Pawar told reporters in Baramati, Pune district. Whatever the party (Congress) chooses about the speaker (candidate), we will all support it.”
Maharashtra Governor B S Koshyari recently wrote to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, requesting that he make a decision on filling the Speaker’s position.
The election of Speaker, however, will not take place during the state legislature’s recently finished two-day monsoon session.
“They were suspended based on what happened in the Assembly,” Pawar stated in response to a question about the BJP’s suspension of 12 MLAs during the monsoon session for alleged misbehaviour. There is not much to it… It’s finished.”
On July 5, the 12 MLAs were suspended for reportedly misbehaving with the presiding officer in the Assembly Speaker’s chamber.
