The 13th Founder’s Memorial Day was observed last February 14, a homage to late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, Founder-Chairman, Hindustan Group of Institutions. The tribute was done with due benevolence and respect to him.

He was a philanthropist by birth; an educationist with a noble vision true to his words  and a pioneer who established the institution in early 1960s to train young aspirants and technocrats. He was also an activist with keen interest to uplift the underprivileged and above all, a true humanist by nature.

The Founder’s Memorial Day event gathered Principals, Deans, Heads, Faculty and Students from all Hindustan Group of Institutions, and distinguished invitees at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS). Rev. Eapen Mathew, Vicar St. Paul’s Mar Thoma Church, Adyar rendered the Opening Prayer. Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, HITS was in full admiration to the late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese and recalled the latter’s achievement such as introducing the first private aircraft to India and his enormous contribution to the nation.
Floral Tribute to Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese was paid by Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chair Person, Hindustan Group of Institutions; Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, CEO, Hindustan Group of Institutions; Dr. Aby Sam, Director, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science; Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science; Dr. Susan Marthandan, Director, Hindustan College of Arts and Science; Dr. k. P. Isaac, Vice Chancellor, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science; Dr. T.S. Sridhar, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary/Commissioner of Revenue Administration and State Relief Commissioner (Retd.), Govt. of Tamil Nadu; and Mrs. Raghavi Senthil Kumar, Founder, Headway Foundation; and President, Tamil Nadu Wheelchair Basketball Association.

Hymns praising the glory of the Lord was sung by chorales representing Hindustan International School and Hindustan College of Arts and Science. Miss. Elina, Hindustan International School and Mr. Gopi, Orient Flights Aviation Academy gave message from the Bible. Excerpts from “Wheels and Wings”, an autobiography of Dr. K.C.G. Verghese read by Mr. Nayan Kumar Mishra, Chief Instructor, Hindustan Institute of Engineering and Technology threw light on Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese’s traits on being a composed person, yet an astute decision-maker. A video compiling the legacy of over 5 decades of journey of Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI) brought scintillating admiration to the Founder and his accomplishment in building HGI, the huge edifice of education.
Dr. K.C.G. Verghese was a dedicated leader of “Y’s Men International,” a worldwide service organization. Y’s Men Clubs served as a perfect platform for Dr. K.C.G. Verghese to serve the destitute, senior citizens residing in old age homes and patients ailing from varied diseases.

To pursue the legacy of this legendary person, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Charitable Foundation was established in his honour in 2006 to attend the needy, downtrodden, and extend relief assistance at the time of crisis. The foundation firmly believes in empowering persons with disabilities; and ensures inclusiveness and equality to all. As a gesture of appreciation and recognition, the Foundation (Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese) presented a cheque worth Rs. 6 lakhs to Tamil Nadu Wheelchair Basketball Association. This monetary contribution could promisingly be invested to procure efficient Wheel Chairs working on latest technology. The event captured the release of “Dr. KCG Verghese Charitable Foundation Newsletter” by Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, whose first copy was received by the Chief Guest, Dr. T.S. Sridhar.

Dr. T.S. Sridhar in his special address recollected his early days’ association with Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese in highway projects. He was awestruck with the tributes being paid to Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese. Dr. T.S. Sridhar said that the Founder had rightly handed over responsibilities to his children at right time enabling them shoulder the growth of HGI. He also added that the unlimited qualities of youngsters should be tapped into and given opportunities. Whilst Mrs. Priyanka Ghosh, Principal, HIS proposed the Vote of Thanks, Rev. Jobi Varghese, Student Chaplain, HGI rendered the Closing Prayer.

On this notable moment, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) presented “Academic Affiliated Certificate” to HITS. As a mark of following the continuous rich and vibrant principles of the founding father of HGI to enhance quality education, Dr. T.S. Sridhar inaugurated “Advanced 3D Printing Machine” at SIMENDES Research Centre. A special Blood Camp organized at HITS collected 600 Units of blood from Students and Faculty.

The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living. We hope every individual who becomes a part of HGI idealizes this visionary, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese and tries to emulate his noble vision towards excellence and tread in the path of where he was laid to rest.
