Be ready to learn always

Learning is never a one stop shop, it is an ever going process. There is no end to it, said Union Minister for Women and Child Development and Textiles Smriti Irani.

She was addressing the gathering of students at the annual covocation of VIT Chennai on its premises on November 12. Seeking knowledge is not limited to students’ institutional journals, they should be ready to earn knowledge through out their lives, said Smriti Irani.

About 1,703 graduands, including 64 Ph.D scholars and 179 rank holders got their degrees. Number of research papers being submitted in India is on the rise, she said.

About 331 research papers were published in India in 2006, this number went up to 3,301 in 2016, the reason behind this was the sustained efforts made by institutions like VIT, she said.


It is happy to note that VIT has been recognised by Government of India as an Institution of Eminence (IOE), she said. Union Minister hinted towards entrepreneurship. ‘Students must look towards oppurtunities to launch start-ups in their respective institutions.’

Founder and chancellor of VIT G. Viswanathan said education is a fine way to realise the dream of turning India into a 5 trillion dollar economy. India should be the destination for higher education for students from various countries.

Indian Bank CEO and MD Padmaja Chunduru students must make choices wisely, follow ethics in life to succeed. They should look towards giving back to the society post their successful life, she said.

Union Minister also inaugurated Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium, a gymnatorium with a 2,500 seating capacity and built at a cost of Rs.31 crore. VIT Chennai vice chancellor Anand A. Samuel, VIT vice president G.V. Selvam were among others present.
