IIT Jodhpur Creates History at 12th Convocation: Record 151 PhDs Awarded, 1,442 Students Graduate

Jodhpur, June 6, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur marked a historic milestone during its 12th Convocation Ceremony, awarding degrees, diplomas and certificates to 1,442 students, including a record-breaking 151 Ph.D. scholars, the highest number of doctoral degrees conferred in a single convocation in the institute’s history.

Held in three phases comprising the Postgraduate Convocation, Undergraduate Convocation and the 2nd Commencement Ceremony for Executive Education Programmes, the event celebrated academic excellence, cutting-edge research, innovation, leadership and the spirit of nation-building.

The convocation was presided over by A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman of the Board of Governors, while Prof. Avinash Kumar Agarwal, Director of IIT Jodhpur, presented the institute’s annual report, highlighting a transformative year marked by rapid academic expansion, record research funding, startup growth and international collaborations.

Record Number of PhD Degrees Reflects IIT Jodhpur’s Research Excellence

Among the 1,442 graduating students, the most significant achievement was the award of 151 doctoral degrees, underlining IIT Jodhpur’s growing stature as a research-driven institution.

The graduating batch included students from undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes across diverse disciplines in engineering, sciences, management, design and medical technologies.

National Leaders Inspire Graduates to Lead with Innovation and Ethics

The convocation brought together some of India’s most distinguished scientific, academic and administrative leaders.

The Postgraduate Convocation featured Dr. S. Somanath, former Chairman of ISRO, as Chief Guest and Neelkanth Mishra, Chairman of UIDAI, as Guest of Honour.

Addressing students, Dr. Somanath emphasized that technology must always serve humanity and encouraged graduates to become ethical innovators capable of solving global challenges.

Neelkanth Mishra described the graduating students as the “Amrit Kaal Generation”, urging them to take on ambitious challenges and contribute to building a technologically self-reliant India.

The Undergraduate Convocation was graced by Dr. Ajay Kumar, Chairman of UPSC, and Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISc Bengaluru.

Dr. Ajay Kumar encouraged students to become creators of opportunities and institutions while contributing actively toward the vision of Viksit Bharat. Prof. Rangarajan urged graduates to embrace Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies while ensuring ethics and human judgment remain central to innovation.

The Executive Education Commencement Ceremony featured Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Director General of Police, Rajasthan, and Sharat Kaviraj, Commissioner of Police, Jodhpur, who emphasized lifelong learning, leadership and integrity.

Presenting the Director’s Report, Prof. Avinash Kumar Agarwal highlighted IIT Jodhpur’s rapid transformation under its vision of “IIT Jodhpur 5.0”.

Five New Academic Departments Established

The institute expanded significantly with the launch of five new departments:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Energy & Automotive Engineering
  • Environmental & Sustainability Engineering
  • Economics

New centres including the Manekshaw Centre of Excellence for National Security Studies and Research and a dedicated MedTech Centre were also established.

₹102 Crore Research Funding Secured

Research emerged as one of the institute’s strongest pillars during 2025-26.

Key achievements include:

  • 211 new sponsored research projects
  • More than ₹102 crore in new research funding
  • Ongoing research portfolio valued at approximately ₹170 crore

Innovation and Startups Continue to Flourish

IIT Jodhpur’s entrepreneurial ecosystem witnessed impressive growth.

Through the Technology Innovation and Startup Centre (TISC):

  • 75 startups supported
  • 23 new startups incubated
  • More than ₹5 crore funding raised
  • 35 intellectual property filings facilitated

The IITJ iHub Drishti Foundation further supported 12 technology startups and enabled 19 additional IP filings.

Intellectual Property Milestones

The institute filed:

  • 78 patents
  • 5 design registrations
  • 2 copyrights

Additionally, 49 patents were published and 36 intellectual properties were granted or registered.

Global Expansion and International Collaborations

IIT Jodhpur continued strengthening its global presence.

Highlights include:

  • 41 active international MoUs
  • 292 applications from 18 countries
  • 54 international internships completed by students
  • Hosting the 7th All IITs International Relations Conclave 2025

Strong Placement Performance Reflects Industry Trust

The 2025-26 placement season showcased growing industry confidence in IIT Jodhpur graduates.

Building a Sustainable and Future-Ready Campus

IIT Jodhpur continued its commitment to sustainability and infrastructure development.

The institute planted 5,000 new trees, taking total campus greenery to nearly 50,000 trees, while restoring six hectares of degraded land.

Simultaneously, Phase 3B infrastructure development worth approximately ₹523 crore commenced, adding hostels, residences, a research park and a state-of-the-art auditorium complex.

Upon completion, the campus will be capable of accommodating more than 7,500 students and 500 faculty members, reinforcing IIT Jodhpur’s vision of becoming a globally recognized institution of excellence.

As the Class of 2026 embarks on new journeys, IIT Jodhpur’s 12th Convocation stands as a celebration not only of academic achievement but also of innovation, leadership, entrepreneurship and service to society.
