The day of 29 October 2019 will stay in the minds of one and all in Tamilnadu. For, this was the time when emotional moments were seen in the state as many gathered to bid tear filled farewell to Sujit Wilson.

The child fell into an abandoned borewell while playing near his house in Nadukattupatti in Tiruchirapalli district in Tamilnadu a few days ago and various establishments jumped into action mode to bring the toddler out.

The efforts did not yield results as the boy who remained trapped inside the borewell did not remain with life. This has once again brought infront of us the dangers of neglecting the abondoned borewells.

This negligence has often made us pay a heavy price in form of loss of life. In couple of other situations the victims could be rescued after herculean rescue efforts. There are guidelines by Supreme Court with regards to borewells.

These guidelines say that if a borewell turns unused at anytime, a certificate must be obtained from the authorities concerned and such information must be maintained with either District Collector or Block Development Officer. The guidelines also say fencing around borewell must be made at the time of its construction or repair.

But the lessons seems to have not been learnt. The case of Fatehveer Singh, the two year old child seems to show it. The child fell into a 120 feet borewell in June this year at Bhagwanpura village. The 109 hour rescue effort could not bring the child with life.

The victim could not get food or water though he could get supply of oxygen. The case of four year old Seema also brings out the same point. She fell into 440 feet deep borewell in Melana village in May this year. The 14 hour rescue operation could bring her body out.

The case of one year old boy Nadeem stands an example of herculean rescue work. The boy fell into 55 feet deep borewell in Balsamand village of Hisar district and it took 40 JCB machines and 100 men and a rescue work of 48 hours to save the child. What is required is a strong effort, for only that can prevent loss of precious life.
