Sushant Singh Rajput’s last on screen appearance will make you cry more than the original The Fault In Our Stars. And we all know why.

Directed by Former Casting director Mukesh Chhabra, this film is an adaptation of John Green’s novel The Fault In Our Stars. It stars debut actor Sanjana Sanghi as Kizie Basu and Sushant Singh Rajput as Immanuel Rajkumar Junior aka Manny. Dil Bechara is a tale of two young people battling cancer, -Kizie, who had thyroid cancer and Manny, who is a survivor of bone cancer. From the beginning of the movie, the impending doom is made obvious. If you have read the book or watched the 2014 American version of the film, you will know exactly why this movie is so surreal. It is almost as if Manny and Rajput’s fates are intertwined. When watching a movie like this one in such a heavy context, objectivity goes out of the window. But I will try to be unbiased, to the best of my abilities.

Set in Jamshedpur, the plot introduces Manny in Kizie’s erstwhile boring life. And soon – maybe too soon things are rosier. The two begin to develop an intimate connection, bonding over kizie’s favourite musician, Abhimanyu Veer (Saif Ali Khan), and Manny’s obsession with Rajnikant. While the larger plot is the same as in the novel, the story is Indianised and Bollywoodised. ‘Okay? Okay’ becomes ‘Seri? Seri’ and PJs substitute any intelligent attempt at humour . The run time of the movie is not like a typical Hindi movie – it’s a little over one and a half hours. And honestly, it feels like it should’ve been in order to do justice to some of the characters and plot lines.

Bottom line… Dil Bechara is not an easy watch . Keep a box of tissues ready and be prepared to curl up in a ball later. The film’s beautiful Soundtrack, composed by AR Rahman will play on loop in your head for a few days.
