COVID Impact: Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana becomes No.1 Show

Ramanand Sagar’s popular TV Serial Ramayana which was featured on Doordarshan in 1987 was loved by the public. This famous TV serial again in 2020 after the nationwide lockdown due to COVID and achieved the honor of becoming the world’s no. 1 shows.

 As a report of April 2020, the show had more 7.7 crore viewers, officially declared by DD India on its twitter handle.

 In Social media dated April 30, DD India wrote:

“Rebroadcast of #Ramayana on #Doordarshan smashes viewership record worldwide, the show becomes the most-watched entertainment show in the World with 7.7 Crore viewers on 16th April.”

After the decision of the Central government for nationwide lockdown, Doordarshan declared the broadcasting of Ramayana to help people stay home and keep entertained as they were restricted to stay home, in the four walls of their home, on public demand itself on March 28.

The show is a plot of life of mythical character Lord Rama directed by Ramanand Sagar which he struggled to make after reading the books based on Rishi ‘Valmiki’s’ Ramayana and ‘Tulsidas’s’ Ramcharitmanas and was first aired on DD National from January 1987 to July 1988.

The show had 78 episodes in total and was featured at Doordarshan every Sunday.

Arun Govil and Deepika Chikhaliya played the role of Lord Rama and his wife Sita, and Lakshman, brother of Rama was played by Sunil Lahri.

The show was also featured in ‘Limca books of record’ in 2003 as the most famous mythological serial in the world. The show won the hearts of the audience then and now as well. 

Actor Arun Govil and Deepika had done an amazing job have to give them their best. The show made people remember their old memories. Not only old age people but all the generations showed their exemplary interest in the show.

Small kids to their grandparents all accompanied together to watch the show daily. This show united many families and had left an everlasting impact on the minds of people. 

The second part of Ramayana ‘Uttar Ramayana’ was also loved a lot by the audience. The struggle of Mata Sita and her two twin sons Luv-kush made the audience emotional and attracted a huge part of the audience. Above all that the song sung by the twin brothers won the hearts.

Overall Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana made the nationwide lockdown interesting and the show becoming the world’s best show and families coming together to watch the same was one of the positive impacts of COVID.
