SHOOTING ACADEMY OPENED AT SRMC & RI

The Centre for Sports Science (CSS) of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute and Olympian Gagan Narang’s Gun for Glory (GFG) launched a state of the art Shooting Academy at the university, the first of its kind in India, to provide scientific training aimed at getting more medals at international levels on May 23,2018.

Mr. Balakrishna Reddy, Tamil Nadu minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, inaugurated the academy said that the academy will be a big boost for shooters from the state and nearby areas to aim for Olympic level achievements. He also added that he is happy to associate himself with the academy to encourage many more sportspersons to achieve at national and international levels in all fields.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr.S.Arumugam, Director, CSS said that the vision is to bring Olympic medals for India in Shooting using the unique combination of the coaching expertise of Gagan Narang’s shooting academy combined with cutting edge Sports Science backbone that CSS provides. CSS is Asia’s largest Sports Medicine facility equipped with state of the art 3D Biomechanics lab, exercise physiology labs, High-Performance Centre, Indoor Multipurpose Sports Arena and a world class Fitness Centre. CSS has both national and international experts in these areas in partnership with University of Cape Town, South Africa. Recently, State of the art indoor shooting ranges at a distance of 10m, 25m and 50m respectively have been set up within this facility. The vision is to produce Olympic Medals for India in 2024 with the synergistic combination of GFG’s coaching expertise and sports science support from CSS, he added.

Mr.Yusuf Panvelwala, Administrator, Gagan Narang’s Sports Promotion Foundation said that this joint academy aims to not only to scout and identify talents in Chennai and adjoining areas but it also aims to roll out the opportunity for the sporting enthusiasts who can take up shooting as a recreational sport too. A similar model of popularizing the sport was rolled out in Gujarat by GFT in association with the Government in 2012 which further resulted in attracting various talents from the state.

World record holding shooter Elavenil Valarivan, a young talent from Gun for Glory’s Gujarat venture, trained extensively and underwent rehabilitation at the CSS facility and won the Gold Medal at the ISSF Junior World cup in Australia this year, he added.

Dr.P.V.Vijayaraghavan, Vice Chancellor said the 1.5 lakh sq.feet sports sciences complex is Asia’s best and third of its kind in the world. Dr.S.P.Thyagarajan, Dean Research said from 2019 SRMC & RI is starting M.Sc. courses in Bio-Mechanics and Bio-Kinetics in association with Cape Town University, South Africa.
