Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has put up an impressive performance on the placement arena. Its fine show witnessed over 158 students securing pre-placement orders (PPO) during 2019-20.

Sources point out that major recruiters came from core and RandD sectors. Qualcomm, Intel and Samsung Research were the top recruiters. As many as 158 students have secured PPOs as of 22 November this year which is more than last year where 135 students got PPOs during the entire 2018-19 academic year.

Robust internship programmes conducted at IIT-M is said to be one of reason for good performance of the students of the reputed institution. During the internship students get to intern in companies that are large recruiters.

A total of 1,334 students have registered for placements for the academic year 2019-20. The total number of companies registered for first phase of placements is 170.

They will be recruiting for a total of 322 profiles, including 35 international profiles. As many as 54 startups are also coming for recruitment. Qualcomm was the company to give highest number of PPOs to the students.

While it gave 23 PPOs, Samsung Research (Noida, Delhi, Bengaluru combined) gave eight PPOs. AB Inbev and Texas Instruments gave eight PPOs while Intel provided seven PPOs.

About 41 percent of the companies that offered placements for 2019-20 are from Core and RandD sectors, while companies hailing from Analytics, Consulting and Finance comprised 25 percent. FMCG sector was four percent and 21 percent of placements came from IT sector companies and companies from other sectors comprised nine percent.

Professor Ravi Kumar, advisor (internships), IIT Madras  said since the creation of the internship cell in 2014 the number of PPOs has continuously increased. It is obvious that internship provides an opportunity for both the employers and the students to know each, understand the requirements and if companies do feel good about the students who worked as interns, they are likely to be offered PPOs the following year.

‘From this year we have extended the services of the internship cell to MTech students as well and process has been formalised. The entire internship team did a wonderful job in achieving this.’
