The 190th Graduation and Reception Ceremony of Madras Medical College (MCC), one of India’s oldest and most prestigious medical institutions, was marked by pride, achievement, and ambitious reforms as Tamil Nadu Health Minister K. Arulraj unveiled several initiatives aimed at strengthening medical education and student development.

Addressing graduates, faculty members, and dignitaries at the Athyayam 2026 celebration held at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, the minister reflected on his own journey as a student at MCC, describing his admission to the institution as a lifelong dream fulfilled.

“Studying in MCC was a dream for me which came true,” he said, recalling how his years at the college shaped his personality, leadership abilities, discipline, and confidence. He noted that the experiences and lessons learned during his student life played a significant role in his eventual rise in public service and politics.

Government Focuses on Strengthening Medical Education

Highlighting the state’s commitment to academic excellence, Arulraj announced plans to introduce a faculty and student exchange programme with leading international institutions. The initiative aims to provide medical students and educators with global exposure, advanced learning opportunities, and access to international best practices in healthcare and medical research.

The proposed exchange programme is expected to enhance collaboration between Tamil Nadu’s medical colleges and renowned universities abroad, helping students gain a broader understanding of global healthcare systems and innovations.

World-Class Sports Facilities Planned for Doctors and Medical Students

The Health Minister also emphasized the importance of physical fitness among healthcare professionals. Referring to the popular saying that “a doctor is often a poor patient,” he stressed the need for medical professionals to prioritize their own health.

To support this objective, the Tamil Nadu government plans to develop modern indoor and outdoor sports facilities for doctors and medical students. The proposed infrastructure will encourage regular physical activity and promote a healthier lifestyle within the medical community.

A Celebration of Academic Excellence

The convocation ceremony honored the achievements of the graduating batch, with more than 70 medals and awards presented to outstanding students for academic excellence and overall performance.

The event showcased the rich legacy of Madras Medical College, which has been producing distinguished healthcare professionals for nearly two centuries. The institution continues to play a vital role in strengthening India’s healthcare system through quality medical education, research, and clinical training.

Vision for the Future

The announcements made during the ceremony reflect the Tamil Nadu government’s broader vision of modernizing medical education through international partnerships, infrastructure development, and holistic student growth. By combining academic excellence with global exposure and wellness initiatives, the state aims to prepare future doctors to meet evolving healthcare challenges both in India and around the world.

As Madras Medical College celebrates its 190-year legacy, the institution remains at the forefront of medical education, continuing to inspire generations of healthcare professionals and leaders.
