Last week, the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) decided to convert Aqua Line’s Sector 50 metro station into a ‘She-Man’ station. This move is taken to promote transgender rights and its regarded as a great one by many.
Special provisions and employment will be provided at this station to the people of the transgender community, stated the officials from NMRC.
They also said that the naming of the station will raise awareness and sensitivity.
This was established in view of embracing the existence of transgender people in the society and to develop a more sensitive approach among the common people towards the transgender community.
Priorly, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited in Kerala had taken such a move by hiring a total of 23 transgenders.
There are 4.9 lakh transgenders in India and around 30,000 to 40,000 of them stay in NCR, according to Census 2011.
“Management at the station will be sensitized and trained with regard to issues concerning the community. The station will have public display signs and announcements will also be made awareness among passengers. Noida Metro Rail Corporation plans to include members of the transgender community at ticket counters and other areas of the station,” said the CEO of Noida Authority to India Today.
Opened in January 2019, the Aqua Line includes 21 metro stations from Sector 52 in Noida to Depot metro station in Greater Noida.
