From journalism to art

Journalism was the arena where he had a very long stint. But there is the field of art where he got a real big call. The transformation for K S Dilipkumar from journalism to art has been fruitful. He spoke to ‘Infodea.in’ recently after completing a solo show of his sketches at Darbar Hall in Kochi.

Exhibition titled ‘Boarder’ has sketches drawn from 1991 to present. There were about 500 sketches, curator Radha Gomathy helped him narrow down the number to the ones that were on display in the exhibition.

The days of journalism are still fresh in me, says the artist. I travelled a lot as a journalist, got to see people from various cultures and saw their emotions, way of life from close quarters. All that has helped me when I turned into an artist.

I paint on human emotions, they are like emotions of nature and are like passing clouds. When I draw a picture, I am capturing his mind. The artist is not particular about medium.

I am not particular about the medium used to draw,  but attention is always on human emotions. Solo show is a landmark for an artist, so is this show at Kochi for me. This has managed to attract the attention of the art world and art critics.

Speaking more about the artworks Dilip says, these sketches were done in 15 minutes, some of them were done in two minutes. The human emotions have to be captured in a moment, if it is not done, they may be lost. It is not easy to do it, it is a challenge, but I have overcome it.

I am on stories and I tell a different story eachtime through my creative works. If the story told is the same everytime, there will be no thrill in it. This is the first solo show for me in sketches. Learning is a continous process, it holds good for an artist also.

I keep on learning, constant learning reconstructs us and brings a change in us. You can see it in the sketches, earlier, I used more lines, now I am depicting human emotions using minimal lines.
