During this period of financial crunch, Air India has come up with a “shorter working scheme” on June 19. According to the senior airline officials, permanent employees with the exception of pilots and cabin crew members can choose to work for 3 days a week at 60% salary under this scheme.
They also said that this decision has been taken to increase the airline’s cash flow position during this COVID-19 pandemic. The aviation industry is one of the many industries, which faces extreme financial struggles this year. The majority of the airlines in our country have taken measures like laying off employees and giving pay cuts.
The officials said, “The permanent employee who opts for such a scheme can avail this for a period of one year.”
The workers who opt for this short scheme do not have the choice of taking any other form of job or employment for the remaining days of the week, added the officials.
This decision was revealed just a day after it was reported that Air India was aiming to decrease the ‘guaranteed flying hours’- according to which the pilots are paid -from 70 hours to 30-35 hours for its pilots.
This plan was submitted to the Civil Aviation Ministry for authorization and it has the capacity to reduce the monthly salary of the pilots. Flying allowance accounts for around 70% of their salary. Moreover, the company also has a debt of more than Rs 60,000 crore.
As the country saw some relaxations in lockdown restrictions, the domestic flight services resumed from May 25 after a period of 2 months. This passenger service is being continued with multiple restrictions imposed on people. The international flight services haven’t recommenced yet.
