More than 4000 members from over 25 countries participated in 18th annual conference of DFSI

The three-day virtual international conference of “18th Annual Conference of Diabetic Foot Society of India (DFSI) & 6th Annual Conference of (International) Association of Diabetic Foot Association” organised by Dr. Rajesh Kesavan and Dr. V B Narayanamurthy concluded in Chennai, India today (20th) in a promising note. More than 4000 members from over 25 countries participated in the conference, which started on 18th December and ended on 20th December.

 

This meeting was held as a virtual conference in view of the pandemic. This meeting was presided by Prof. Arun Bal. Prof. Christopher Attinger from Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington was presented with the 18th Annual DFSI Oration award. His oration was on the topic – How to achieve Longevity in Diabetic foot patients. A number of technological and surgical innovations which help in preventing and healing diabetic foot infections and amputations were showcased in this meeting. There was wide interaction online between the delegates and the faculty.

The event adopting the theme “Healing Wounds, Preventing Amputations” saw more than 75 virtual sessions from Indian and International specialities covered the topics on Diabetic foot ulcers, Diabetic infections, Amputations, Restructuring the Charcot foot, Neuropathy, Advancements in wound tech, with video sessions covered the topics on:

  • Compression therapy on venous insufficiency and lymphedema; Venous ulcers – newer learnings in management; Angioplasty for healing Diabetic foot wounds; Rheumatological aspects of Diabetic foot; Non-surgical approach towards effective wound healing; Detecting and managing Diabetic foot in the community

Also, other issues discussed during the three-day virtual interactive sessions including the diabetic foot in time of Covid, Telemedicine in Diabetic foot management, managing diabetic during surgery, facilitation of diabetic care across countries, structured approach to educate and increase awareness among the non-specialist, general, family and nurses to battle against diabetes related complications.

Commenting on the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Rajesh Kesavan, said, “We are glad that this three-day virtual conference gave us an opportunity to conduct a detailed sessions to analyse various case studies and evaluate complications in diabetic foot care which would help the medical fraternity to further strengthen the practical management of diabetic foot care”.

He added, “This was a huge learning experience for doctors practising diabetic foot speciality and this will translate in better patient care and lesser amputations being performed”.

Dr. Arun Bal, President of the society said, “The economic cost of diabetic foot is pretty high and we should look at ways to prevent these complications from happening in the future”.

 

With the increase in Diabetic foot diseases and other diabetic related problems. This is the right time for us to start assessing the holistic and cognitive development of diabetic foot care. This programme will enable us to evaluate untapped case studies on numerous diabetic related issues and find a constructive solution to move towards a healthier lifestyle……
