More than 1,000 students of MOP gathered to observe the International Day of Yoga

More than 1,000 students of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women gathered to observe the International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2019, at the University Union Grounds, Chetpet, with a coordinated yoga routine.

In the Yoga Day celebration held by M.O.P. Vaishnav, in association with the University of Madras, the students, dressed in white, followed the guidance of a yoga instructor to perform breathing exercises, suryanamaskar and various other asanas.

Prof. P. Duraisamy, the vice-chancellor of the University of Madras, lauded the students for their efforts, and urged them continue practising yoga. “Yoga is the state of harmony at every level of existence and offers holistic experience in every aspect of wellness,” he said.

Dr. Lalitha Balakrishnan, principal of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, also remarked on the benefits offered by yoga, saying, “Yoga helps us to be fit not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well.”

The morning’s proceedings, also attended by Dr. R. Srinivasan, Registrar, University of Madras, Dr. V. Mahadevan, director of physical education at the university, included a special yoga performance by an M.O.P. student, Ms. Harshitha.

June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, after a resolution introduced by India received broad support from member countries. Since 2015, June 21 every year has seen yoga enthusiasts coming together to reaffirm their dedication to the practice, which is said to have positive effects on mind, body and spirit.
