SRMIST celebrates World Bioethics Day 2018 with the theme Solidarity and Cooperation

SRM Medical College, Hospital and Research Center inaugurated India Nodal Bioethics Centre of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Haifa during World Bioethics Day celebrations at Kattankulathur campus on October 16th.

Bioethics is the study of controversial ethical issues emerging from new situations due to advances in Biology and Medicine. Ethical practices involve systemic approach in every decision making which will in turn improve doctor-patient relationship and consequently human to human relationship. India Nodal Bioethics Centre at SRM Institute of Science & Technology was established on the auspicious day to teach, train bioethics to students of all disciplines.

The administrators of the center include- Chairman – Prof. Sandeep Sancheti, Vice Chancellor of SRMIST Head of the Unit -Dr. A. Sundaram, Dean (Medical), SRM MSCH & RC Secretary- Dr. K. Gireesh, Deputy Dean & VP, SRM MSCH and RC. Prof. Russell Franco D’ Souza, Head Asia – Pacific Division Director of Education International Program UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Haifa.

After the inauguration with the theme of Solidarity and Cooperation Dr. A. Sundaram felicitated the distinguished dignitaries on the dais namely Prof. Russell Franco D’ Souza, Dr. S. Geethalakshmi, Vice Chancellor, Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Prof. Sandeep Sancheti, Prof. N. Sethuraman, Registrar, SRMIST.

The presidential address was presided by Prof. Sandeep Sancheti quoting “Professional technicality has improved in India from the past and still improving on a daily basis. Engineering professions involves machines whereas the profession of Doctors involves human body, so Bioethics to all doctors is mandatory”.

The guest of honour Dr. S. Geethalakshmi addressed the gathering saying, “Practicing medicine is not a ability of any individual but it’s judgment and decision making. All doctors should serve humanity to the world”.

Prof. Russell Franco D’ Souza emphasized on the importance of ethics in medical field and how all doctors should use bioethics even while communicating to a patient. This was followed by graceful words of felicitation from Prof. N. Sethuraman thanking all the dignitaries for spending their valuable time with SRM amid their busy agenda.

Students displayed posters portraying the importance of Bioethics and best posters were awarded by the chief guests. The event concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. K. Gireesh.
