Chennai, June 2, 2026: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Southern Region has announced an ambitious roadmap to strengthen South India’s position as a global economic powerhouse. Under the leadership of P Ravichandran, Chairman, CII Southern Region and President, Danfoss India, the industry body will focus on accelerating regional competitiveness through growth, resilience, inclusion, sustainability, and trust during 2026-27.
Speaking at his maiden press conference in Chennai, Ravichandran highlighted South India’s growing contribution to the nation’s economy and outlined strategic priorities aimed at boosting manufacturing, exports, digital transformation, and workforce development.
South India Accounts for Nearly One-Third of India’s GDP
South India continues to be a major driver of India’s economic progress, contributing nearly 32% of the country’s GDP and approximately 30% of India’s manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA). The region also generates nearly 40% of India’s services output, reinforcing its role as a critical economic growth engine.
With a combined GDP of ₹57.16 lakh crore in FY25, South India has established itself as one of the country’s most dynamic and investment-friendly regions.
CII’s Strategic Theme for 2026-27
The theme for the year, “Accelerating South India’s Competitiveness: Growth, Resilience, Inclusion, Sustainability, Trust,” will guide CII’s initiatives across the Southern states.

Tamil Nadu Leads Southern India’s Industrial Growth
Tamil Nadu continues to emerge as the strongest economic performer in Southern India. The state recorded a real GSDP of ₹17.32 lakh crore in FY25, the highest in the region, while merchandise exports reached $53.9 billion in 2025, making it the leading exporter among Southern states.
The state also recorded the highest manufacturing GVA in Southern India at ₹3.77 lakh crore, driven by its diversified industrial ecosystem.

To strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a global industrial hub, CII has proposed several strategic recommendations:

- Electricity and renewable energy grid connectivity

Alongside P Ravichandran as Chairman, Krishna Bodanapu, Executive Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Cyient Ltd, has assumed office as Deputy Chairman, CII Southern Region for 2026-27.
The new leadership team aims to strengthen collaboration between industry, government, and institutions to unlock South India’s full economic potential and drive sustainable development across the region.
