Despite weakening into a deep depression, Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall on November 30 in Puducherry, is still causing major disruptions throughout the union territory and neighbouring Tamil Nadu, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

Although the cyclone has lessened, its effects are still rather severe, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Puducherry has been rendered entirely immobile by torrential downpours, and the Indian Army has had to intervene to evacuate stranded citizens due to the streets becoming swamped.

Residents of the area are dealing with extensive floods and infrastructure damage, calling the incident the biggest natural disaster in thirty years. A. Namachivayam, the education minister of Puducherry, has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday, December 2, 2024, in reaction to the issue.

Critical effects have also been felt in Tamil Nadu’s nearby Villupuram district. M.K. Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, described the downpour as “unprecedented,” emphasising how unusual the meteorological phenomenon was.

Residents in areas impacted by flooding have been evacuated by the Indian Army, which has been actively involved in rescue efforts. In the meantime, state officials are putting in a lot of effort to evaluate the damage and offer affected areas the assistance they require.
