97% of Indian Railways’ Broad Gauge Network is electrified
INN/New Delhi, @Infodeaofficial
Broad Gauge (BG) railway lines are being electrified by Indian Railways (IR) in a mission manner. Indian Railways has finished electrifying over 45,200 route kilometres on its Broad Gauge (BG) network between 2014–2015. From around 1.42 km/day in 2004–14 to approximately 19.7 km/day in 2023–24, there has been a significant increase in electrification.
Approximately 97% of the Indian Railways’ whole BG network is currently electrified. In addition to being roughly 70% more cost-effective than diesel traction, electric traction is more environmentally benign.
For electric trains to function, a dependable power source is essential. Several protections are included into the system, such as links to the national grid via central and state transmission utilities. To guarantee continuous services, grid substations and traction substations include redundant power sources.
