The speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, stated on Friday that there has been a notable growth in the northeastern area lately. Speaking at the 21st annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), India Zone-3 in Aizawl, Birla stated that the Northeast’s economic development depends on the building of railway lines, which is a critical step towards improving infrastructure, better roads, and increased air connectivity.
He stated, “The work done in recent years to increase physical, digital, and social connectivity has transformed the Northeast region from a marginal region to the first region,” alluding to the revolutionary changes and development in the region. “Many foreign investors have already shown keen interest in India, and with better connectivity, the Northeast’s untapped potential in agriculture, art, culture, and tourism could attract even more substantial investments,” added the speaker.
He went on to say that the Northeast area is crucial to realising the goals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the advancement of the nation. The Mizoram Assembly is hosting the two-day CPA conference. The last day of the tournament is Saturday. The occasion was attended by leaders from Mizoram and outside the state, including Mizoram assembly member Lalbiakzama, chief minister Lalduhoma of Mizoram, deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh, speaker of the Nagaland legislature and chairman of CPA zone-3 Sharingain Longkumer.
Referring to the conference’s topic, “Democratic sanctity, transparency, accountability, and results from democracy,” Birla noted that the integrity and openness of legislatures contribute to the growth of democracy, which in turn raises public confidence in democratic institutions. “In a democracy, it is the responsibility of the elected officials to speak for the people. To the best of our abilities, we must endeavour to meet their demands and requirements,” he stated.
Birla emphasised that legislators’ poised behaviour guarantees the legislative’ effective operation. He emphasised the need of productive talks and debates in the Houses that align with the aspirations and expectations of the people. He stated that democracy is strengthened only when legislators, in spite of differences in opinion, work together to discuss and deliberate on issues of public concern. Birla proposed that the houses be used by elected officials to address the concerns of the populace. “If members work with the commitment to the service of their constituents, the quality of lawmaking will also be enhanced and the dignity of legislative institutions will increase,” he stated.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh both spoke during the function.
