In order to introduce voting papers across the country, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called for the launch of a campaign. Kharge asked the BJP leaders to store the machine in their godowns, declining to remark on the advantages or disadvantages of EVM. He recommended that a campaign similar to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra be launched.
Speaking at today’s Samvidhan Rakshak Abhiyan celebration at Talkatora Stadium, the president of the Congress said that the SC and ST votes were being wasted under the existing EVM voting method. “EVMs are not what we desire. “Give us the paper ballot and you will realise where you stand and what is your condition,” he added, criticising the BJP and Modi without using their names. “We will vote on the ballot papers.”
Kharge said that the Congress ought to start a campaign for this reason and encouraged other political parties to do the same. Adani was accused by the Congress president of using his funds to support the BJP in Maharashtra. He noted that Modi was giving him so much money that he was unable to handle it all and that he was using it to support the BJP in elections.
“They have no constitutional values, no institutional integrity, no federal character, and whatever is in the constitution they are trying to destroy one by one,” he said, accusing the BJP of undermining the constitution and its principles. Although freedom of expression and freedom of religion were guaranteed by the constitution, he claimed that during the final eleven years of the BJP’s administration, there was only “kaato aur baato” (split and kill) and no freedom of either.
“The Congress will never allow that to occur,” he said. “Religion will not cause division or death among people. Together, we will safeguard and defend the nation,” he promised. While pointing to instances of women being raped, Adivasis being urinated on his face, and Dalit grooms being humiliated and frightened if they rode a horse during the wedding, Kharge claimed that the situation of the untouchables was the worse.
Kharge praised the nation’s voters for saving Narendra Modi from becoming a despot if he had won 300 or 400 seats or more, since they only managed to secure 240 seats. He claimed that Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu were now supporting Modi. “Modi will fall the moment even one crutch is removed,” he said.
He made fun of the BJP and its leaders for claiming that the Congress was attempting to sow discord. He reminded the BJP that prior to the country’s division, Syama Prasad Mookerjee, their leader, had partnered with the Muslim League to form a government in Bengal. He claimed that Rajiv Gandhi and Ms. Indira Gandhi, two prominent Congressmen, had given their lives to preserve national unity. He questioned both the BJP and the RSS, asking them what they had contributed.
