JKARS organised the first-ever traditional boat race for women in Dal Lake, Kashmir, as a celebration of strength and culture. More than 150 motivated women participated in the event, shattering stereotypes and advancing inclusivity and empowerment in the Valley.

Celebrated athlete Bilquis Mir, who was India’s first female juror for water sports at the last Olympics in Paris, volunteered to be the primary organiser for JKARS. Bilquis Mir oversaw the event with her team from the J&K Watersports and Kayaking/Canoeing Association, making sure it was motivating and unforgettable.

It is important to note that Suresh B. Kapadia, a resident of Nashik, Maharashtra, who has been a steadfast supporter of the social and economic advancement of Kashmir and its young, organised the event. Well-known for his attempts to boost tourism in Gurez, Kapadia has significantly improved the lives of numerous people in the area.

Since many of the contestants were artisans making top-notch bags for Caprese, the tournament also showcased the variety of skills possessed by Kashmiri women. This demonstrated that the artisans’ hands are just as adept at stitching as they are at swimming. With special incentives for the top three finishers, each participant earned a certificate and eye-catching cash prizes.

VC LCMA, Younis Malik, congratulated Bilquis Mir for her contributions to the sport and her efforts to bring honour to the Valley, while Dr. Burhan, President of JKARS, gave a vote of appreciation to close the ceremony.

Prominent figures graced the occasion, including renowned broadcaster Tabraiz Nik Madani, Holistic Minds & Soul founder Dr. Souliihaa Rasool, Principal of BHSS Nowpora, Dr. Masrat Parveen, and Special Secretary of Tourism Mathura Masoom.
