Tamil Nadu Honours World Chess Champion

The Tamil Nadu government gave Grandmaster Gukesh D a hero’s welcome and a ₹5 crore award at a lavish event held in Chennai today to celebrate his historic triumph in the World Chess Championship.
After a stunning tour in Chennai on Tuesday, 18-year-old chess star D Gukesh received congratulations. This accolade follows his stunning triumph over China’s Ding Liren in a nail-biting 14-game match at the 2024 FIDE World Championship in Singapore.
Gukesh is the youngest world chess champion, making history. Chief Minister MK Stalin gave Gukesh a ₹5 crore cash reward during the event, and the lavish banquet was a worthy celebration of the young prodigy’s remarkable achievement.
Gukesh highlighted in a speech how important Chennai and the Tamil Nadu government were to his chess career. He conveyed his sincere appreciation for the help he got, mentioning in particular the programs that helped launch his global career. Government officials, chess lovers, and sports dignitaries attended the event.
