Ice hockey’s increasing appeal in Ladakh is turning the area into a winter sports hub for the entire country. Ladakh is rapidly becoming a well-known destination for winter sports aficionados thanks to its natural ice rinks, enthusiastic athletes, and encouraging infrastructure.

This development was demonstrated at the 16th CEC Cup Ice Hockey Championship, which was held at the Ice Hockey Rink Bemathang in Kargil. 32 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams competed in the competition, demonstrating the broad interest in the sport.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of their goalie, Irfan Ali, Friends Pashkum overcame Drass Warriors in an exciting penalty shootout in the Men’s Final. After regulation and extra time finished in a tie, Irfan’s game-winning saves were crucial in securing the 4-2 triumph. He won Best Goalie of the Tournament for his outstanding play, signifying the growing caliber of skill in Ladakh’s ice hockey community.

Down Hill Kargil defeated Bodh Kharboo by a decisive 2-0 score in the Women’s Final. Maryam of DKAS Kargil won the Best Women Goalie award for her exceptional defensive efforts, while Samina of Down Hill Kargil was named Player of the Series (Women) for her continuous excellence.

In an interview with the media, Dr. Mohd Jaffar, Chairman and CEC of LAHDC Kargil, highlighted Ladakh’s potential as a world-class winter sports destination. “Irfan Ali and other athletes are demonstrating Ladakh’s extraordinary talent. We hope to hold international events soon with further training and infrastructure investments,” he said.

Promoting winter sports in the area has been greatly aided by the recent construction of the Ice Hockey Rink Bemathang and other projects. In addition to promoting ice hockey, the government’s emphasis on developing cutting-edge infrastructure and nurturing talent is opening doors for other sports including skiing, snowboarding, and snow trekking.

Ladakh is the ideal location for winter sports because of its lengthy winters and naturally occurring ice formations. Women’s participation is also rising in the area, which is indicative of its inclusive sports culture. Ladakh is on track to become a top winter sports destination, motivating sportsmen and attracting explorers from all over the world, thanks to the administration’s dedication to development and the example set by champions like Irfan Ali.
