The Maharashtra government and the Sports Authority of India today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Sports Authority of India to get land in Kandivali, Mumbai, for the National Centre of Excellence. Because of this ruling, SAI can now develop the area without facing any obstacles pertaining to land ownership.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal was present when the Memorandum of Understanding was signed. This Memorandum of Understanding was recently approved by the Maharashtra cabinet. Piyush Goyal addressed the assembly and claimed that because the previous administration did not take sports seriously, significant steps had been done to increase participation in sports. The last government didn’t prioritise it.
The current government has taken several significant steps to support sports and athletes since Narendra Modi took office. I have no doubt that India will host the Olympics in 2036. For political purposes, some people have attempted to divide people based on caste, religion, and even sports.
The 37 acres of property in question have been leased by the Sports Authority of India for 30 years at a fee of Re 1 per year. SAI intends to use this land to build state-of-the-art sports infrastructure that meets international standards.
A Master Plan for the Kandivali campus is currently being finalised by SAI. The proposed infrastructure includes modern AC athlete hostel buildings, a central kitchen and dining area for athletes, a new international standard hockey turf with flood lighting, a multipurpose sports hall, a high performance sports science centre for injury and rehabilitation, and other features. The proposed infrastructure is expected to require up to Rs. 500 Cr. in funding, which SAI intends to obtain from a variety of sources, including CSR and government budgetary allocation.
In addition to implementing central government schemes like Khelo India, Fit India, SAI NCOE, SAI STCs, National camps, support for National sports federations, TOPS, etc., SAI plans to use the 37 acres of land to operate its National Centre of Excellence and Regional administrative centre, with jurisdiction over the states of Maharashtra, Goa, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Athletes from all throughout the nation will receive top-notch nutrition and sports training from SAI, as well as help in sports science from subject matter specialists. Through its Come and Play programme, it will also give year-round access to multi-sport facilities, including football, athletics, wrestling, and other disciplines, to the local prospective athletes of Mumbai and Maharashtra after the infrastructure is developed. Many ambitious young athletes from Maharashtra and across India will be inspired to pursue their Olympic dreams by the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding.
