No party wants law to clean up politics, rues Supreme Court

“No political party was curious for drafting a law to decriminalize politics by prohibiting candidates against whom grave charges have been drafted by the courts, adding that the legislative branch of the government has not been keen on putting up a step in this orientation,” the Supreme court said on Tuesday.

“There is peace in diversity,” quipped the bench of justices Rohinton F Nariman and BR Gavai. “Unfortunately, we shall not make laws. We remembered the legislature to seize action against the candidates against whom charges have been phrased however nothing has been commended. Nothing is done and in the future, nothing will be done by any party,” the court said.

The court was giving attention to a contempt petition filed by advocate Brajesh Singh, who alleged arbitrary insubordination of court orders by several political parties during the Bihar assembly elections in 2020.

Singh’s petition was brought up in a Supreme Court judgment in February 2020, formulating it necessary for all political parties to accommodate on their websites and also publish in two newspapers data esteeming the pending criminal cases against candidates being fielded by them and the motives for assigning them. Singh acknowledged that various parties failed to formulate in the public sphere the facts of criminal prototypes of their candidates, apart from barely citing their winnable as the factor for selecting them.
