Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, was a distinguished guest at the Maritime Conclave in Chennai.
According to Minister Sonowal’s speech, India’s port handling capacity has doubled in the past ten years, and new road networks have improved port connection and shortened container turnaround times. He described the government’s focus on promoting growth in the maritime industry, highlighting recent projects like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the Global Maritime India Summit.
The Minister underlined that two important components of these programs are the development of international cruise terminals and the encouragement of green hydrogen production. It is anticipated that these developments will increase maritime tourism and generate hundreds of thousands of new jobs.
By 2047, the government wants to establish India as a fully developed country. In order to establish India as a major maritime power and strengthen its position in international trade, public-private partnerships would be essential.
Along with other dignitaries, Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of the Chennai Port Authority; Malini Shankar, Vice Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University; and Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command, attended the occasion.
