He who got speed has an edge over others. Southern Railway has perhaps aware of this point, for it is making efforts to increase speedlimits of trains in its zone.
According to sources, the speed limit of all trains in Southern Railway is soon going to be raised to 110 kmph. Normal trains also will be running at the speed of 110 kmph soon. It is heard that the Southern Railway is undertaking upgrade of tracks to take up the speed limit of 110 kmph.
General Manager of Southern Railway R K Kulshrestha said Southern Railway has a track network of 7311 kilometres and target of achieving the speed limit of 100 kmph was set for the year 2018-19 on that.
Tracks were upgraded and speed limit was enhanced to 100 kmph. After this focus is now on enhancing the speedlevel of 110 kmph. Prior to this speed limit on many used to be 75 to 95 kmph.
Chengalpet to Karunguzhi, Dindivanam to Parni, Salem to Karur, Villupuram to Tiruvennainallur Road, Tiruvennainallur Road to virudachalam Junction, Virudachalam to Matur, Villupuram to Mailaduthurai, Tiruchirappalli Junction to Manaparai, Manaparai to Kalpattichatram, Kalpattichatram to Tamaraipadi were among the routes to have upgraded tracks for a speedlimit of 100 kmph. After upgrading of tracks permanent speed limit of 50 kmph has been removed on many of them.
After the second phase of upgradation of tracks which is to be over in a few months from now, there will be a uniform speed of 110 kmph across Southern Railway, he said.
