The first Metro train, comprising of six coaches, procured by Delhi Metro for its Phase – 4 operations, reached Delhi today, marking a significant milestone towards completing and operationalising the priority corridors of Delhi Metro Phase-4. This train set was inaugurated on 23rd September earlier this year in presence of DMRC and Alstom delegates after completion of manufacturing of all 6 cars of first trainset at Rolling Stock manufacturer Alstom’s facility at Sricity near Chennai. The train was stationed at Delhi Metro’s Mukundpur depot, where it will undergo a number of tests required for its statutory certification for revenue service as a part of established rules and protocols.

DMRC will receive 312 Metro coaches (52 trains) as part of the RS-17 contract for its Phase 4-priority corridors, which are Majlis Park to Maujpur, Janakpuri West to R K Ashram Marg, and Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity. In the upcoming days, all of the trains will arrive in Delhi gradually. Out of the 312 coaches, 234 coaches are allocated for the extended sections of Line – 7 (Pink Line) & Line – 8 (Magenta Line), i.e. Majlis Park to Maujpur and Janakpuri West to R K Ashram Marg. The balance 78 coaches are for the Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity corridor.

In keeping with the Delhi Metro’s mission to offer its riders top-notch services, all of these trains will be able to operate autonomously, supporting the government of India’s Make in India campaign. With GOA 4 autonomous characteristics, these Indian-made trains are built to operate at up to 85 kmph and reach a safe speed of up to 95 kmph. The Mukundpur – Maujpur expansion of the Pink Line will receive 90 new coaches (15 trains), while the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg extension of the Magenta Line will receive 144 new coaches (24 trains). As previously stated, there will be 78 additional coaches (13 trains) on the new Golden line route that connects Aerocity and Tughlakabad.

In the national capital, DMRC is building 86 kilometres of new lines along five distinct corridors as part of the Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion. The two new corridors, Lajpat Nagar – Saket-G Block and Indraprastha – Inderlok, are in the pre-tendering stages, while three corridors—Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg, Majlis Park – Maujpur, and Aerocity – Tughlakabad—are currently being built. The Delhi Metro currently operates on a network of 391 kilometres with 286 Metro stations (including the NOIDA – Greater NOIDA corridor and the Rapid Metro, Gurugram) operating with a fleet of about 350 Metro trains with four, six and eight coach combinations on both, broad gauge as well as standard gauge tracks.

One of the most cutting-edge metro trains in the world for large urban transit is the Delhi Metro. In December 2020, the Delhi Metro network’s Magenta Line saw the start of India’s first autonomous operations. In November 2021, autonomous services were subsequently added to the Pink Line as well.
