The day of Sri Lanka’s general election is November 14

Nominations for the next general election in Sri Lanka close at noon on Friday. The parties proposing candidates for the national list have received guidelines from the Election Commission.

All political parties and independent organisations running in the election have been advised by the poll body to submit a list of qualified candidates for the national list during the nomination period.

In the meantime, nomination papers for a number of the main political parties running in the next general election have already been turned in. A total of thirty-three political parties and independent organisations have already filed nominations to run in the general election, according to the Election Commission.

November 14th is the day of the general election, which will elect 225 lawmakers, 29 of them are from the National List. A national list member of parliament is a member of parliament appointed to the Sri Lankan Parliament by nomination from a political party or an independent organisation. A contesting party’s or an independent group’s allotment of national list MPs is determined by the percentage of their national vote share.
