Sri Lanka is pushing to join the BRICS, with a formal request for India’s support made recently. Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Vijitha Herath told reporters that the request was conveyed during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar during his official visit to Colombo last week.
Minister Herath stated that Sri Lanka has been invited to the upcoming BRICS Summit later this month by Russia. However, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will not attend the summit due to Sri Lanka’s ongoing election period, the minister clarified. Despite this, the invitation to the summit is deemed significant for the island nation, with details on its representation yet to be confirmed.
BRICS, an alliance of emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has expanded recently to include new members such as Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE.
