Transparency International expresses grave concern about intentional assaults on media and journalists

The ongoing intentional attacks on journalists and the media, litigation driven by personal grievances, and malevolent acts with hidden agendas that are meant to harass have all drawn grave concerns from Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
“These actions are not conducive to the establishment of an anti-discriminatory ‘New Bangladesh,'” the TIB said in a news release on Wednesday. In order to foster a safe and fearless atmosphere for journalists and the media, the anti-graft agency is encouraging the interim government to enact strict measures against this worrying trend that jeopardises free journalism.
In order to guarantee responsible journalism, TIB also asked all parties involved to stop the abuse of media influence and journalistic authority. It was deeply concerned about attacks and restrictions on many media outlets by self-interested organisations, as well as the widespread litigation and harassment of journalists.
“The interim government has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that media freedom is upheld and that journalism is safeguarded from external influences,” stated Iftekharuzzaman, the executive director of TIB. However, TIB expresses grave concern over the fact that a number of self-serving organisations are stepping up their attacks on specific media outlets, including intimidation, threats, and slander.
Every time media coverage contradicts the interests of influential groups, it seems like efforts are being taken to censor it, intimidate reporters, or control it. Such occurrences are a concerning indication for Bangladesh’s free press’s future.
Attacks on journalists are a bad reflection on the “New Bangladesh,” Dr. Zaman said. Arbitrary threats, attacks, sieges, and, in some cases, pointless litigation intended to settle personal grievances or the whole cancellation of accreditation cards are clear signs of an authoritarian government that is hostile to the people, he explained.
TIB highlights how authoritarianism will unavoidably return as a result of the repression of dissent and the media’s sense of insecurity. We call on the interim administration to move quickly and decisively to create a climate of confidence for independent media. Otherwise, there is a significant risk that media freedom would become a hollow ideal.
“TIB believes that journalists who are accused of specific criminal acts or who are actively involved in alleged authoritarianism should be thoroughly probed,” the TIB executive director added. However, events like arbitrary cases against journalists, accusing them of being associates of the fallen government, the Press Information Department cancelling press accreditation cards, threats, and dismissals, do not send a positive message about media freedom in the nation. At the same time, TIB exhorts media professionals to uphold moral journalistic principles and refrain from abusing their power.
