Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student organisation of the Awami League, has been outlawed by the country’s interim administration, which is headed by Prof. Muhammad Yunus. In response to the Student Movement Against Discrimination’s demand, the Ministry of Home Affairs published a notice in the gazette on Wednesday. BCL is a 76-year-old student organisation that supports the Awami League.
The announcement claims that the Chhatra League has engaged in a number of public safety-compromising acts during the previous 15 years under the Awami League government, including rape, torture, murder, harassment in dorms for students, and tender manipulation.
The notification further states that there is enough proof to conclude that BCL has persisted in committing different terrorist crimes as well as provocative, disruptive, and conspiratorial actions against the state.
As a result, the announcement stated that the interim government has immediately banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009. Bahauddin Nasim, the leader of the Awami League, denounced the interim administration, claiming that the prohibition of BCL is an assault on the constitution and the spirit of the Liberation War.
