On Friday, the Sanatan Jagran Mancha in Bangladesh staged a sizable demonstration in Chattogram to call for the dismissal of a “false” case against 19 individuals, including International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) member Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari. In addition to threatening to start a series of protests if the case is not withdrawn by this coming Monday, the platform issued a two-day ultimatum. Sanatan Jagran Mancha, a group that supports the rights of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, has Chinmoy Krishna Das as its spokesperson.
Thousands of Hindus participated in the Sanatan Jagran Mancha-organized protest march in the Cheragi Pahar neighbourhood of Chittagong on Friday afternoon, renewing their eight-point demand despite a number of obstacles. One of the Sanatan Jagran Mancha’s organisers, Gauranga Das Brahmachari, spoke at the rally and said that they would send a memo to Prof. Muhammad Yunus, the leader of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, asking him to drop the false case. If that didn’t work, they would announce a more stringent program nationwide.
Additionally, he claimed that cops prevented anyone from attending the nonviolent demonstration. According to Prothom Alo, one of Bangladesh’s top daily newspapers, law enforcement officers set up shop throughout the port city, prohibiting the public from participating in the two-hour march, which ended at 5:00 p.m.
Liakat Ali Khan, the deputy commissioner (south) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, stated that despite an administrative directive to cancel the gathering, people disregarded it. According to Gauranga Das Brahmachari, they would fulfil their eight-point demand even though they were being threatened with incarceration. “We have respect for the government. Thus, the rally will be held in a nonviolent manner.
The BNP, or Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has realised its error. For this reason, Firoz Khan, the case’s complainant, was expelled. He went on to say that if the people who incited Firoz Khan are not identified, the nation’s name will be continuously disparaged. A Chittagong citizen and BNP employee named Firoz Khan filed a sedition lawsuit against Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari and eighteen other people earlier Wednesday night for allegedly raising the saffron flag above Bangladesh’s national flag atop the Independent Monument in Chattogram last week.
Media sources state that on October 25, the Sanatan Jagaran Mancha held a sizable gathering at Chittagong’s ancient Laldighi Maidan, demanding the safety and rights of Bangladesh’s minorities. Some anonymous individuals are accused of hanging the ochre flag atop the Independent Monument during the rally. No other flag or coloured flag may be flown over the national flag, under the Bangladesh Flag Rules of 1972.
