Russia calls on Syrian society to respect the beliefs of all ethnic and religious groups

With great concern, we are keeping an eye on the catastrophic events in Syria. After speaking with several parties involved in the Syrian Arab Republic’s military conflict, Bashar al-Assad made the decision to resign as president of Syria and depart the nation, giving the government instructions to hand over control amicably.

Those negotiations did not involve Russia. We do, however, urge all parties to refrain from using violence and to seek political means to settle any disputes pertaining to governance. The Russian Federation keeps in touch with all Syrian opposition organisations in this regard.

We implore all stakeholders to honour the beliefs of every racial and religious minority in Syrian society. We wholeheartedly endorse initiatives to create an inclusive political process founded on UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which was overwhelmingly approved.

In the framework of carrying out UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s recent offer for urgent inclusive intra-Syrian negotiations in Geneva, we hope that the UN and other stakeholders will take these approaches into consideration.

Additionally, Russia is doing everything it can to protect our citizens in Syria. Syria’s Russian military installations are on high alert. Right now, their security is not in any real danger.
