Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, blasted the United States’ “destabilising presence” in the region on Monday following the stationing of B-52 bombers. When asked about the deployment, Baghaei responded at a news conference, “We have always believed that the presence of America in the region is a destabilising presence,” adding that it “will not deter (Iran’s) resolve to defend itself.”
In a warning to Iran, which has threatened to retaliate for Israeli strikes on its military installations on October 26, the US military stated on Saturday that it will be sending B-52 bombers to the Middle East.
Israel launched the operation in response to an Iranian missile barrage on October 1st, which was retaliatory in and of itself for the murder of a Revolutionary Guards commander and terrorist leaders sponsored by Iran. According to officials at the time, the strikes were responsible for the deaths of at least four soldiers and “limited damage” to a few radar equipment. The death of a civilian was also reported by Iranian media.
Iran would respond in a “definite and decisive” manner, according to Baghaei. In Gaza and Lebanon, where Israel is at war with the Iran-sponsored Hamas and Hezbollah armed groups, respectively, he continued, Iran welcomed “all initiatives and efforts” to promote a truce.
