Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated with flower tributes from India’s High Commissioner, Santosh Jha, and Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. A bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Colombo Prime Minister’s Office was garlanded by them. The bust was a 2019 gift from India in observance of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birthday.

Gandhiji’s 42-inch-tall bronze bust was created by Padma Bhushan Awardee Ram Vanji Sutar in a meditative attitude. Additionally, Mr Sutar is recognised with building the Statue of Unity, a bronze statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel located at Kevadiya, Gujarat, which is the tallest in the world.

The Indian High Commissioner congratulated Dr. Amarasuriya on her promotion to the position of Premier of the island nation when she visited her after the event. While sending his best wishes for her stay, Mr. Jha reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the people of Sri Lanka. Throughout the conversation, opinions on how to quicken the development of the two nations’ complex bilateral ties were shared.
