Following a one-day foreign office consultation (FOC) with India in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s foreign secretary Jashim Uddin stated on Monday that the country expected all “unsettled issues” with India to be resolved as quickly as possible and asked for their cooperation, expressing a desire to work together in that regard.
India is Bangladesh’s nearest neighbour, and the two countries decided to continue their “historic” relationship in a “free, frank, and candid” dialogue, Jashim Uddin told reporters at a briefing. India expressed interest in developing friendly and productive relations with Bangladesh during the meeting, he said. India, meanwhile, expressed worries over “attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties” and the security of minority communities.
The statement claims that when Bangladesh emphasised the signing of the Teesta water sharing agreement and the renewal of the Ganges Water Treaty, which was set to expire in 2026, the concerns of common rivers were given additional attention at the FOC. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Dhaka also wanted treaties over other shared rivers finalised and anticipated India’s assistance in exchanging flood warning information and flood control measures.
One of our largest trading partners is India. We have emphasised the need to eliminate current tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Jashim Uddin stated, “We have asked them to provide an uninterrupted supply of vital commodities from India.” According to BSS, the foreign secretary stated that he was invited by his counterpart, Vikram Misri, to attend the upcoming FOC in New Delhi at a time that would work for all parties.
