Business executives in Bangladesh warned on Saturday that the country’s law and order crisis has not been addressed by the interim government. At a business conference hosted by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) at a hotel in Dhaka, they voiced their fears that it would be challenging to sustain the economy if things did not improve quickly, according to the Business Standard (TBS), one of Bangladesh’s top business daily.
Selim RF Hossain, managing director of Brac Bank, stated at the event that the government is working to restore the institutions that have been decimated over time. But the government hasn’t done a good job of maintaining law and order, he said.
Hossain urged the government to act quickly to correct the issue. If not, he said, it would be extremely difficult to revive the economy, according to TBS. “The law and order situation has declined sharply,” Abdul Muktadir Rahman, chairman of Incepta Pharmaceuticals, stated during the show. Right now, nothing can be more crucial. According to TBS, he urged the administration to establish a deadline for resolving the issue.
“The government must ensure uninterrupted gas and electricity supply while improving law enforcement in order to lower business costs and sustain industrial productivity,” stated Ashraf Ahmed, president of the DCCI. In order to assist the private sector, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, he also advocated for business process automation, tax administration improvements, and reduced interest rates.
