North Korea denounces US military exercises and cautions that a possible escalation could lead to actual conflict

The United States’ combined military exercises and deployment of military equipment to the Korean Peninsula were sharply denounced by North Korea, which warned that such measures may quickly turn into a real conflict.

According to Yonhap, which cited Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the head of the Ministry of National Defense’s Information Office released a statement criticising the recent arrival of a US nuclear-powered submarine at a major naval base in South Korea and the trilateral Freedom Shield exercises, which involved South Korea and Japan.

“We strongly warn the US and its followers hostile towards the DPRK to immediately stop the hostile acts of further causing provocation and instability that can drive the military confrontation in the Korean peninsula and its vicinity into a real armed conflict,” the KCNA said in an English-language statement on Saturday. DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which is the official name of North Korea.
