Lockdowns have been implemented across the country to avoid the Corona epidemic. This lockdown has also been implemented in Tamil Nadu. After this lockdown, some people are bound to leave the house and have to face a lot of trouble.
During these hard times, the staff of Amma Canteen is providing food to the hungry people cheaply, their troubles have gone unnoticed till now. Chandra, who runs the Amma Canteen of Egmore, says that in this Amma canteen, all the people, whether rich or poor, are served equally.
The canteen has been receiving a lot of crowds since the lockdown. But the concern for them is that the employees of the canteen have not been provided with any kind of mask or sanitizer by the government. Apart from this, she and her staff reach there from far-flung areas of the city. Even if a member of her family comes to leave her, he has to face the bitter action of the police. Their only demand is that they should also be provided with an ID card and pass system from the government. If the government arranges these for them, then they and their families will get rid of these problems.
She explains that this problem is not only faced by her but with all the employees working in the Amma canteen. In this time tremendous times of lockdown, when we are working for the people’s well being, then the government should also think about our safety and convenience. For the common people, where the government is distributing sanitizers and masks, we should also be provided with such facilities.
Free food is provided to government employees and the elderly in this, Amma canteen. According to a data, since March 24, 26.32 lakh idlis, 7.27 lakh rice food products and 15.03 lakh rotis have been sold in 4.07 lakh Amma canteen in Chennai. Amma Canteen has seen 30 percent more footfall since March 24.
John Wesley, who works in contract with the Chennai Metropolitan Corporation, says he was having a lot of food problems since the lock-down, but Amma Canteen is still managing to work in such hard situations.
