During today’s Question Hour, Union Minister for Road Transport and Safety Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha that the country will soon see the rollout of the cashless treatment of accident victims program.

The minister stated in his response during Question Hour that the program that is already in place in six states will soon be introduced in Uttar Pradesh and thereafter in the other states. The program allows traffic accident victims to get up to 1.5 lakh rupees in cashless hospital treatment.

The minister expressed concern about the increasing number of highway accidents and asked the members to establish Accident Prevention Committees in each area to investigate the causes of these incidents. According to him, the states with the highest rates of traffic accidents include Madhya Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

Bengaluru and Jaipur have the highest accident rates among Delhi’s cities. The minister claimed that the cashless treatment program has saved 2100 lives in the six states where it is now being used, citing the fact that 30 percent of road accident victims pass away as a result of not receiving prompt medical attention.
